In this class, students will explore the diverse and colorful world of textile arts. Textiles are all around us and students are always excited to learn new techniques to make a project of their own by hand. We will get into hand-sewing, simple embroidery, hand-printing and stenciling, braiding, crocheting, stuffing, weaving, etc. to create art objects and wearable accessories such as a simple pouch, a lavender pillow, a soft sculpture, a bracelet and more. All levels are welcome.

About the Instructor:

Birgit Gehrt

Birgit Gehrt has been teaching art and fiber related classes in the BUSD enrichment after school program since 2017. She has also taught art camps at Kala in Berkeley. She currently teaches at Cragmont, Jefferson, Emerson and Malcolm X Elementary. She has a BFA in Textiles from CCA in Oakland and a MFA from the University of California, Irvine. She was owner of Loulen Studio, a one-of-a-kind accessories craft business which specialized in hand-made, high-quality totes and purses. Besides having a passion for teaching art, especially for textile and fiber related classes, she is also pursuing her own art making career. She loves hiking in nature, cooking yummy food, Farmers Markets and riding her bike all over the East Bay.
